Respect and Depthcore

Journal Entry: Wed Oct 20, 2004, 2:27 AM
The 15th pack of DepthCore was released days ago… along with some ‘heated discussions’.

185 submissions for the 15th pack for an art group existing for 2 years and 7 months…

Quite some numbers.

Last night I excavated my CDR-chives. These hold my internet loots. The collections that would not fit anymore in my dual 80GB hard disk are stored there.

One of these CDs contains Depthcore’s first release… the Cataclysm Pack. Released June of 2002, after being delayed for two months since its inception on the third month of that year.

The old blue-ish box-type lay-out is there. The artworks are there. The pioneer member list was there.

We were 15 then. Just 15. And the release contained around 35 artworks… individual pieces and collaborations included.

Yes we were 15… but we have among other things… respect.

Respect.

Respect for a fellow member’s skill. Respect for his artwork. Respect for Depthcore.

It wasn’t written officially. But it was there.

We have respect for the group as a whole. We don’t submit rushed-for-the-sake-of-submission artworks. (And please don’t get me wrong here… I’m not saying there are rushed submissions as of late (besides who am I to judge one’s artwork when I am here miles away from a fellow depthcore member)).

I remember working on Splendid Illusion, our first collab with Justin. I remember the 32MB .psd file on my AMD 350Mhz/128SDRAM machine. I remember the effort placed on that piece. I remember how long it would take to open that file.

It was all for the love of Depthcore…or as I would prefer stating it… respect for Depthcore.

The ‘digital to the core’ line…

Of course we have ‘negative-trendwhore-trendwhore’ feedbacks even then. (Which probably had inspired the url of one of our founders : ] )

But we have always, as Justin points out… lived with that the-hell-with-them attitude. We had fun… we create… we release… DC-life goes on.

Honestly I have no problems if it’s 2D or 3D or 4D or 6D. It’s the effort that is placed into the artwork that counts a lot. The passion fused… which is partly in line with respect for the ‘core’.

And who else can judge that but the individual himself. Not me… not the viewers… not the founders but the creator itself. We don’t often moderate (I don’t remember having one) submissions from day one. We assume that when you were admitted/recruited to this group you know what depthcore quality is.

And you have respect for the legacy of depthcore.

I don’t have problems too seeing heated arguments… and ‘internal love fights’. If things bleed, it shows we’re alive.

It shows too that we have freedom within. The borg don’t rule us. We tame the borg.

What I’m having a hard time accepting are the pissing-each-other-kiddie attitudes.

I have nothing against a fellow depthcore member views even if it is partly against the group (or the current pack). If it makes sense, then why not listen?

If it is released then there are underlying reasons. In fact I admire the honesty and straightforwardness. I admire the candor.

I don’t have problems with our lead defending the group. I admire that too.

What I don’t admire are the one-line arguments made for the purpose of mocking which is of course detouring the topic at hand.

Depthcore is about skills and respect. Not about skills alone. Nor respect alone… it goes hand in hand.

The old members have carried this group with pride, skills and respect.

Engrave that legacy into your digital souls.

Amen in deed, i was looking at the latest release and remebering back about 2 years ago when i first started to get into graphic design/digital art what ever you call it its all art in my books, and i was so captivated by the peices desperatly wanted to know how they were created. This strive to obtain the knowladge and skills the members had very quickly had me experimenting rading as many tutorials as i could none of it helped though, all i could do was stare in awe while my brain had a visual overload.. still today i feel the same thing when i look at depthcore pieces even though my skills have come along way i still am no where close to what you guys can bring to the table any group that can have that effect deserves all teh respect it can get.

Yupe. We "old" members need to take care of the group again as you mentioned. What is hard is that some of these "old members" are however allowing the lax situation to prevail in the group.

But as you noted me, it will take time, and only by our effort and art can we should what abstract art should be.

Someone commented my journal and it is very true. "Some people change because it is changing, but this time they can't be more creative and so they all change to 2D." How pathetic that is to happen in our group. We showed to others we feared because we lacked the inspiration. Perhaps it is time (for me as an admin) to lead the group for creativity again. However, only if some people listen :giggle:

still not done the drama? well put though. i remember looking at dC a few years ago, all intrigued, then had things to take care of, but got back here eventually. there's still respect from here even though i'm not dC, you're all crazy :P

dont know much about depthcore but that words are just WOW, really amen...
~cokine:iconcokine: Oct 20, 2004, 2:09:05 PM
Though I used to be in dC, whenever I look at the new stuff I stand in awe and wonder how the fuck I ended up there... :)

Nicely worded though. Just wish I knew what intrigue was all about... Overflows of new people in groups usually lead to turmoil. There are bound to be a few sour grapes, sadly :/
